Green Corridor between Aurangabad and Pune saves life at Sahyadri Hospitals

Today, Sahyadri Hospitals created a green corridor from Aurangabad to Sahyadri Hospital in Pune to save the life of a 48 year old man suffering from liver cirrhosis. The distance between Aurangabad and Sahyadri Hospital Deccan Gymkhana in Pune is over 230 kilometers which usually takes 6 hours to traverse. Through the green corridor the stretch was covered in 3 hours 10 minutes. Sahyadri Hospitals team left Aurangabad at 9.50 am and reached Sahyadri Hospital Deccan Gymkhana, Pune at 1 pm today.Green-Corridor

The 45 year old donor was an accident victim from Aurangabad and he was declared brain dead at United CIIGMA Hospital on 31st January 2017. Post securing necessary approvals from Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC), a team of expert doctors from Sahyadri Hospitals travelled to Aurangabad to harvest his liver after.

A team of doctors comprising of Liver Transplant & Hepatobiliary Surgeons – Dr. Bipin Vibhute, Dr. Rahul Saxena, Transplant Anaesthetist and Dr. Manish Pathak successfully performed the transplant on 48 year old patient suffering from liver cirrhosis at Sahyadri Speciality Hospital Deccan Gymkhana. Sahyadri Hospitals has performed 33 liver transplants till date.

Dr. Bipin Vibhute Liver Transplant & Hepatobiliary Surgeon, Sahyadri Hospitals, said, “48 year old male patient suffering from Liver Cirrhosis, was in an immediate need of a transplant. As soon as we were informed about an organ donation case in Aurangabad, our team visited the hospital and harvested the liver of a 45 year old brain dead donor. The procedure from harvesting the liver to transplanting is highly complicated; however, it successfully helped the liver cirrhosis patient to survive and the green corridor was of immense help”.

Dr. Ketan Apte, Unit Head, Sahyadri Speciality Hospital, Deccan Gymkhana said, “The family of the organ donor from Aurangabad has taken a noble decision of donating organs of their 45 year old kin.  Usually it takes 6 hours to travel from Aurangabad to Pune, thanks to the relentless support extended by  Pravin Munde, DCP Pune traffic, the entire Traffic Police Team and ZTCC coordinator Arti Gokhale, this entire Organ transfer and the green corridor exercise was executed successfully. This exercise has given a new lease of life to the 48 year old Liver Cirrhosis Patient. Arti Gokhale, coordinator, Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC), Pune said, “We received the indication from Aurangabad about the potential donor last night after which we contacted Sahyadri Hospitals in Pune. Aurangabad Police and Pune Police were involved in creating the corridor and required good co-ordination among them. The green corridor was successfully created and liver was transported to Sahyadri Hospitals in the morning. Last year, 6 livers were transported from Aurangabad to Pune and this was the first case of 2017.”

Green corridors which are mainly created to tackle medical emergencies have manually-operated street signals to avoid peak traffic. Green Corridors in Pune have saved lives of many patients in the past as well.

Sahyadri Hospitals got its liver transplant license in March 2016 and has successfully conducted 33 liver transplants till date.
