Monsoon & Oily skin debacle

Oily skin is caused due to excessive oil production by sebaceous glands. Oily skin on its own is prone to problems. Following certain skin care tips for oily skin in monsoon weather can help tackle these problems to a great extent. Why does oily skin have complications? The answer lies in the over active oil glands. The skin has minor pores through which it breathes. When the oil glands secrete excessive oil the skin pores tend to get blocked and this poses a threat to the wellness of the skin.

Common problems faced by people with oily skin during monsoon:

  1. Zits- This condition involves the build-up of sebum in the pores of the skin. Sebum is an oily substance made by the sebaceous glands under the skin. When this becomes trapped, it can form pimples on the surface of the skin. It is also caused by clogging of pores, attracting colonisation of local bacteria leading to break outs.
  2. Shiny skin- this happens due to enlarged appearance of pores and also because of application of artificial cosmetic products.
  3. Oily skin always has a dull & greased appearance which makes one look perpetually tired.

One basic mistake that people with oily skin make is that they excessively scrub the face to remove the oil. This practise on a regular basis opens pores which accumulates dirt and sebum. One should use a very mild Ph balanced cleanser and wash the face not more than twice a day. Avoid using harsh soaps & hot water. For cosmetic products one should use oil free makeup, moisturising agents & sunscreen.

Internally , hydration is very important along with cutting down on unhealthy sugars & fats. Essential fatty acids are required for healthy skin balance.

Retinol based products and mild dosage of isotretinion is recommended for people with oily skin.
