~Liver donated by the family of a brain dead woman in Aurangabad~
Global Hospitals, a multi super specialty tertiary care hospital successfully conducted a liver transplant for an ex-navy officer, this Independence Day. The family of a 52 year old woman who was declared brain dead post a road accident in Aurangabad; decided to donate her organs, the liver was brought to Mumbai which saved the life of a retired navy officer who was suffering from liver cirrhosis and was on the waiting list for around 6 months to get the liver transplant done.
As per the government rules for organ allocation, the liver was allocated to this patient in Mumbai and the kidneys were allocated to two patients with chronic kidney disease in Aurangabad.
Dr. Ravi Mohanka, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon and Head of Department, Global Hospitals, Mumbai said, “On being notified of the liver allocation in the early hours of 15th August, the team of doctors at Global Hospitals, Mumbai, swung into action immediately. The option of chartered flight to Aurangabad was explored but could not be organized, even no commercial flights to Aurangabad were available, hence the doctors decided to make the journey by road. The organs were retrieved in Aurangabad and brought to Mumbai via a commercial airline. The timely co-ordination and immediate action helped us successfully perform the transplantation; after which the patient is doing well.”
Manpreet Singh Sohal, Regional CEO, Global Hospitals said, “Being the pioneers in organ transplants, it is our constant endeavor to save as many lives as possible by performing timely transplants. It is an honour for us to save the life of an Indian soldier by harvesting the liver all the way from Aurangabad within a strict timeline. It is our mission to provide the best in class treatment and medical services to our patients; bringing in world class technologies, advancements and state of the art infrastructure.”
It is a symbolic case of organ transplantation in a way that on Independence Day, a man who dedicated his life to the service of the nation gained independence from his debilitating chronic liver disease.
