Doctor’s at Fortis Hospital, Mulund along with Medical Social Workers and nursing staff worked in perfect synchronization, enabling a lifesaving surgery on a 61yr old male recipient. The surgery became possible when the family of a 26yr old male consented to donate his organs after being declared brain dead at Apollo Hospital in Navi Mumbai.
The young donor, a 26yr old engineer by profession from Navi Mumbai was initially rushed to a primary care hospital after a road accident in the city. He was later shifted to the Navi Mumbai hospital where he was subsequently pronounced brain dead. Medical Social Workers counselled the grieving family about Organ Donation. The patient’s brother encouraged the family, who jointly consented to donate his Heart, Liver, Kidneys and Corneas, thus saving and enriching the lives of at least 6 patients with end-stage organ failure.
The heart was retrieved by the Organ Retrieval Team from Fortis Hospital, Mulund which was ferried via a Green Corridor to be implanted into the 61yr old male recipient from Kandivali. The patient was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy and had been put on the super urgent wait list earlier this month. The donated heart was transferred out of the donor hospital in Navi Mumbai at 02:16PM and reached Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 02:46PM via a Green Corridor covering a distance of 27Kms in 24Mins.
